Karlovy Vary town was founded in the year 1350 AD, by the Czech king and Roman emperor Charles IV.
Legend has it that Charles IV was deer hunting when he discovered the mineral hot springs. Under his reign, the town of Karlovy Vary was founded at the confluence of the Ohre and Tepla rivers. 
This is the biggest and most famous spa town in the Czech Republic. More than 6 million people from all over the world have visited the town during its existence. The spa tradition is the alpha and the omega of Karlovy Vary. More than 70 hot springs can be found here and twelve of them are used for the drinking treatment. 
The town is situated on the confluence of the Tepla and the Ohre Rivers, and surrounded by three mountain ranges. More than a third of the town area is wooded, and woods surround the town on all sides. There are extensive wooded paths to wander, and architecture characterized by the Art Nouveau and historicism styles of the end of the 19th century.

The benefits of the mineral hot springs, however, were known to man long before that. Archaeological evidence reveals that since primitive times, humans have settled around these healing waters.

Karlovy Vary developed around its 12 mineral springs, each with its own specific concentrations of minerals and trace elements which have restorative and curative effects on the body. The temperatures of the springs range from 42C to 73C, and the hottest spring, the Sprudel, spouts 15 meters high.
