Infection Control Roadshows...

The pivotal role of nurses in preventing the transmission of Healthcare Associated Infections

Abstract:
-------------

HAI are a serious threat to the health of populations and despite the advances made through microbiological and pharmaceutical research, the end sight is still a far way off. Research has shown that the most common  cause   for   this   is non   compliance  with regards to hand hygiene. Which leads us to ask, what constitutes hand hygiene?

HAIs are  considered    an    undesirable outcome, and   as  some  are preventable, they are considered an indicator of the quality of patient care, an   adverse   event and a patient safety issue. The extent and implication of this has    led    to the Joint Commission placing it as an IPSG.

In general, nurses are the    healthcare     workers    who are most in contact with patients and as such, they can play a pivotal role  in the prevention of HAI. Nurses are the frontline defense for   applying daily infection control practices to prevent infections   and transmission of organisms to other patients.
