Bad
Ischl
Bad
Ischl is the oldest salt water spa in Austria, and since 1823
it has offered cure treatments. In the Emperor's thermal, visitors can
choose between several natural ways of curing: Salt water with 27 per cent
salt content, the cold sodium-chloride sulphate-sulphur spring and a
Glauber salt spring, a salt water drinking spring and mud from the salt
mountain. Emperor Franz Joseph I came to Bad Ischl for his annual summer
residence, spending nearly 70 summers here with hunting and recreation, a
truly loyal guest to Bad Ischl. Various historical buildings and sights
give evidence of the monarch's regular visits. For the visitor an absolute
must is the Emperor's Mansion - his former summer residence. In today's
city museum Franz Joseph got engaged to Elisabeth, and the photo museum in
the "Marmorschlössl" used to be the tea-house the Empress also
known as Sissi.

Archena
The thermal water spring of
Archena rises in the area of Murcia, in the middle of the valley of the
Sierra of Ricote. The first to make use of the warm springs very likely
were the Iberian inhabitants who had settled in Archena approx. in the 5th
century B.C. After the Romans had conquered Hispania, they built thermal
baths and thus brought Roman spa culture to Archena. The warm springs used
to be considered a holy place, since they revealed the healing and
agreeable power of the Gods. In the Middle Ages the Order of Saint John of
Jerusalem expanded the spa facilities and used them for curing its wounded
soldiers. In the year 1785 King Charles III ordered a comprehensive
renovation of the health resort, since many facilities had been damaged
through the rise of the Segura river. In the 18th century Archena became
more and more important as a health resort: The number of visitors
increased, thanks to Fernando VII the resort was renovated again and a
street was built to connect the thermal centres with the rest of the town.
Today, the spa area is idyllically situated, surrounded by lush vegetation
at the Segura river, with lemon and orange trees, palm trees, eucalyptus
and pine trees.

Bad
Kissingen
Since
Kissingen had first been mentioned under the name "chizzicha" in
801 until King Ludwig II of Bavaria made it a spa in 1883 the resort on
the Franconian Saale has been looking back on a history rich in tradition.
Although the area around Bad Kissingen - according to grave and settlement
findings - has already been inhabited since the 4th century B.C., its
history as a spa only began in 823. At this time the first salt springs
were discovered. The extension of the spa garden and the completion of the
first spa rooms by Balthasar Neumann in 1738 was a next milestone in the
development of Bad Kissingen. Thanks to Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria
the spa facilities were considerably extended in 1904. The new spa
theatre, the pump and spring room and the regent's building were
constructed according to plans by Prof. May Littmann. The Max-spring, a
beautiful classical building near the spa garden is the oldest medicinal
spring in Bad Kissingen. Contact:Bayer.

Loutraki
Loutraki, however, had its
beginning as a spa in 1855 when ten wooden cabins were built and after
historical personalities like Xenophon, Pafsanias and Thukididis had
reported on the healing effects of the thermal springs. In 1926, the
number of cabins amounted to 105, but two years later they were destroyed
during a big earthquake. Nine years later reconstruction of the spa
facilities started, which still exist today even though in a much more
luxurious style than at the beginning of the century. Contact:-Thermae-Loutraki,Municipal

Naantali
Naantali locates on the southwestern
coast of Finland, 15 km west from Turku (the old capital of Finland)
surrounded by 10000 islands. Inhabitants of Naantali self-confidently call
their unique resort of the Baltic Sea "The Sun City". No wonder,
since from its beginnings it has been a touristic point of attraction. The
first visitors to come were pilgrims who stayed at the monastery Gnadental
and thus initiated a period of prosperity and high regard for Naantali.
Spa culture, however, also had a strong influence on the development of
the idyllic place. The healing effects of the thermal waters have been
known since 1700 and the first spring house was built at the end of that
century. Today, Naantali Spa Hotel, built in 1984, and the ship Sunborn
Yacht Hotel, completed in 1998, count among the biggest spa resorts and
congress centres in North Europe. Contact: Naantali Spa Hotel, FIN-21100
