Spas...
Medicinal
waters are used in two basic
ways: for
bathing and
as a drinking cure:-
Bathing
for medical purposes has a millennial
past in Europe. Bathing had different
and various functions among ancient
peoples. Hippocrates examined the
utilization of medicinal waters for
treatment. Several of his conclusions
are still valid today. A new
prospering era of balneology - the
science of medicinal waters - together
with hydrotherapy - water cure -
started in the 19th century. The
aspects of hydrotherapy have changed
significantly during the last few
decades. Today’s treatments are not
restricted to using medicinal waters
only. A contemporary “spa physician”
is a rheumatologist, internist or
gynecologist with a wide range of
knowledge. A complex therapy including
the use of medicinal waters, physical
exercises, massages, electro-therapy
and diet plan shows better and quicker
results.
The Romans were the first to build
baths on the territory of today’s
Hungary 2000 years ago. 11 baths have
been excavated in the northern part of
Budapest left behind by the Romans.
Johannine knights established the
first spa-hospitals on the site of
today’s Lukács and Császár baths
(close to the Margaret bridge on the
Buda side of the city). Hungarian spas
became respected world-wide during the
reign of King Sigismund, when Buda was
the capital of the German - Roman
Empire. A detailed description of a
huge spa palace and several smaller
spas was submitted by a French
nobleman called Bertrandon de la
Broquiere, Master of the Horse to the
court of Philip II., Prince of
Bourgogne. in 1432.
Under the reign of Matthias, the great
Renaissance King, the spas of Buda
still had a bustling life. The first
scientific description of the thermal
springs of Buda was prepared by
Vadianus in 1512, mentioning that the
water is too hot for the human hand.
Though the Turkish occupation in the
16th century caused great damage to
the country, its bathing culture was
untouched, even new baths were
established by the Turks. Several of
these Turkish baths still exist in
their original form.
